Cardiff City
During the past 10 years Cardiff has firmly established itself as one of the UK’s top tourist destinations. Cardiff is a lively, engaging and cosmopolitan city with something to offer every visitor. From top sporting events at the Millennium Stadium, to World-class stage performances at the Wales Millennium Centre.
Recent developments such as Mermaid Quay and the Old Brewery Quarter have meant that a huge number of new restaurants have opened in Cardiff during the last few years. This means that there is now more choice than ever before. You can choose from Thai, Turkish, Japanese, Portuguese, Mexican, Indian, Chinese and even a Hawaiian restaurant to name but a few.
Why Cardiff?
Cardiff has enough character to challenge any major city. Voted ‘The Best UK City 2004,’ Cardiff really is more than just the Welsh Capital. Whether it’s retail therapy, city culture or a clubbing experience you’re looking for, Cardiff really does posses it all in abundance.
Being a small city with a population of approximately 350,000 people in comparison to London’s 7.5 million, visitors to Cardiff will find that they can walk around and explore the city at a more leisurely, relaxed pace whether shopping in the day time or wining and dining out at night. For those looking for a cultural experience, Cardiff Castle, Castel Coch and Cardiff Museum, with its various tours and attractions, offer plenty to get your teeth stuck into. While the Millennium Stadium hosts numerous concerts and sporting events throughout the year to suit all tastes and ages.
You only have to take a 20 minute train in any direction and you will find yourself in a completely different scenic adventure. Go south to find the coast of Barry and its island, complete with beach and rocks. Take the train north towards Pontypridd and find yourself in the Welsh Valleys, with its huge lush green hills, and Taff river snaking through. There are plenty of beautiful gems to explore along the way, like the red castle (Castel Coch), which magically appears above the hillside like something out of a fantasy film. Thus, Cardiff has been named for one of the top 10 cities in Europe to visit.
Past Butetown from the city center is Cardiff Bay. Once it was the Worlds largest coal exporting port. Today it is the newly developed area of the city with its marina and set of bars, clubs, restaurants, casino and iconic architecture, like the millennium center. In comparison, it is like the Canary Wharf/O2 aspect of Central London. The bay area is shaped for entertainment for all ages. Between the bay and the city center a taxi will cost approximately £8.
The Welsh are known for being very friendly and sociable and when Wales are playing a rugby match, everyone comes to help cheer on the nation. The atmosphere and energy truly is second to none, and unforgettable. The City with its universities, stadium and friendliness has helped turn this city into a very diverse cultural hotspot with lots going on.
